Do you know what song always pops off really hard around here during the week leading up to Halloween? …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead’s “Eight Day Hell”, the psych-pomp standout from the Austin art-rockers’ criminally underrated 2006 effort, So Divided. The whole thing sounds like an All Hollow’s Eve-themed hippie cult band overtaking the airwaves in the ’60s, and the band was sure to present it as that during live TV performances.
That era may be bygone but sure lives on, as ATX indie rock next gens Being Dead satiate a similar vibration on “Man Or Myth”, one of two new singles announcing their arrival to Polyvinyl Records for the release of their follow-up to 2025’s acclaimed sophomore effort, EELS. Oddly, the listen teeters similarly the fine line between physical and paranormal realms, with theirs being inspired by the life and times of beyond-human freestyle canoeing impressionist Marc Ornstein.
That man (or is it myth?) appears in the listen’s accompanying music video, and Being Dead are sure to soundtrack his artwork on the water in a dazed-and-speckled sun beaming through their frequencies of lo-fi rock, giving gothic allusions to the devil and dark horses an electric orange tint. “We were taken by surprise / Couldn’t believe our eyes,” vocalist Falcon Bitch conjures up the supernatural. When that “Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba” hits, you can’t help but feel hear …Trail of Dead’s “Hell” in their weird energy, too.
