Word on the street is that we’ve got 10 years tops before civilization is doomed. Sure, you could rage in violence, but what if you could dance to the ticking beat of the doomsday clock instead? PUREST FORM don’t force you to choose between one or the other. The Los Angeles hardcore industrial rave trio offer a way to do both by way of their second EP, RESISTANCE.
Since breaking through last year behind their fiery eponymous debut of an extended play, the trio collecting members of Fury, Object of Affection, Choking on Ash, and Pocketknife in vocalist Story Beeson, guitarist and programmer Madison Woodward, and bassist Riley Joyner have only tapped even deeper into the internal conflagration in dire need right now as an outlet as the timeline continues to implode. This one doubles up on their defense artillery of heavy dance-punk music and taps into survival instincts to thwart the ongoing swan dive in baseline humanity by a system set to destroy.
Across six tracks, the trio’s nuclear batteries are fully charged and ready to push back on the assault in full force. Through an event greater containment for atom-splitting EBM beats (“ANIMAL”, “BREAK”), an expansion into post-witch house and acid house-warped atmospherics (“MORE”, “BASS RESISTANCE”), and mega-muscular metallic riffs (“BEYOND TERROR”) slashing through the hellscape, Beeson, Woodward, and Joyner create a sensory-spiking collision that provides the physicality of the pit and the rave a place to exhaust the overload to the nervous system.
When their reverent yet blade-toothed take on the Prodigy’s “BREATHE” exclamates the listen, it’s a great reminder that sometimes when you need an exhale from all of this violence bombarding us, the best way is to do so is by fighting back through an enraged dance.
