“I’d love to move forward / Not scared to look back / Salad days survived / Won’t dispute my checkered past,” sings Max Miller on the chorus behind “Checkered Past”, the latest preview from he and Cosmic Joke’s upcoming sophomore effort, Suburban Decay. Don’t think for one beat now that these Los Angeles hardcore punks are going to let this chance pass them by in slipping some sonic wit into their own energy, as the double entendre isn’t lost with the listen being a proper homage to ska-punk greats like Madness and Op Ivy, though shouting out No Control shows that there’s still ample Bad Religion worship going on here, too. Whatever’s happened in their past lives, it clearly wasn’t just a phase, as they’re proudly carrying those influences one step beyond and turn two-tones full color.
