HAYWIRE – “INTERSTATE LOVE AFFAIR”

Hardcore heads knew HAYWIRE were getting big, but major label big? The Boston hardcore-punk band inking a deal with Roadrunner Records — making them labelmates with recent scene crossover success story TURNSTILE and the likes of Slipknot and Deafheaven — might not have been the obvious next step, as it’s even wilder and still something you love to see happen to a band who’s been working their asses off. They’ve been on a relentless touring schedule for the past two years that’s covered every state on U.S. map and pretty much continent across the globe, been baptized in the pit by local legends the Dropkick Murphys as Boston’s next gen torch bearers, and have done a shit ton of good for their local community along the way. It all leads to the question: what does this leveled up version of HAYWIRE — in introducing their Roadrunner debut, I Don’t Wanna Say Goodbye? with its lead single “INTERSTATE LOVE AFFAIR ” — sound like?

If you caught the band headlining this past weekend’s Sound and Fury, witnessing frontman Austin Sparkman proclaim, “We’re going to do whatever we want for the rest of our lives,” before shooting $5,000 out of leaf blowers into the crowd, that pretty much sums up the kind of momentum they’re rolling on the up and up with. Picking up where those “Summer Nights” left off, not much has changed in how he and the band remain intent on living in moments and soaking in the with the people who matter most through their music. “I don’t care where I’m going if I’m with you,” rings out its chorus over a high speed drive of riffs and drums that sound like a head-on collision between Drug Church’s post-hardcore chaos control and blink-182’s smart-dumb punk-pop, clarified in its production by Citizen frontman Mat Karekes and go-to hardcore mixing agent Taylor Young. On this current timeline of doom, you get why HAYWIRE’s testament of self-faith is resonating with the masses: A ton of people are in need of a ride to get away from it all.
