Maybe it’s a flex against an enemy. Maybe it’s a commentary on pretty privilege. Maybe it’s a conversation about comparison being the thief of joy with herself. Whatever “Gridlock” is getting at in its brash, breathy entry, Hana Freed sets off her new album, Twin Star Fantasy, with a burst of confidence in both sound and mind. “I know you’re not the biggest fan of me / I don’t call / I don’t text / I show up when I feel,” the Bay Area experimentalist pops off in its opening moments through a speaker-blown whisper as an ultra-hype production packs in sputtering synths and beats being ran back without fatigue. “But I’m more beautiful than you,” her voice bats its lashes against the friction. Whichever narrator above this person is, she’s feeling herself in spite of it all.
