“I feel high / When the lights are low,” vapor emanates from Jae Matthews voice, coating glittering cellophane and an electronic impulse that captures your whole body and emotion of attention on “Hard Beat”. It’s an apt descriptor of the energy Boy Harsher have proven themselves to be master of on this dark dance floor known as life over the years, all designed under their own rule of rebellion. The latest single from the Northampton duo of Matthews and August Muller’s forthcoming fifth album — and first since making the leap from their own independent label to major label, Atlantic Records — GET MEAN, finds them sounding intent on making something real beyond the codependence of shadow play, however. “Never asked you to save me,” Matthews prefaces her former admission. There’s loss of control and an inevitable crash in spite of that gleaming declaration of independence, and yet, it’s what makes the listen feel more free than ever.
