Sweeping Promises are one of the more fashion-forward takes on artsy post-punk out there in a sea of familiar geometric patterns and angular designs. It really helps give the Kansas duo their own aura while cultivating an effortless coolness style on the surface level, too. With “Cocoon”, the latest preview from the Kansas City duo’s sophomore LP, You Say I Romanticize, Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug have got sounding sharp down to a tee.
Between Mondal’s thick, thumping bass lines and Schnug’s rhythmic swagger, it’s the perfect environment to break out into a new form. Mondal stilettos across the beat with the confidence of an iconic rock star, and when she tears away that fabric with her scream, it reveals a more dangerous side to the band. “Hand over the wires / Hand me those pliers / Hand me that string / Give it all up to me!,” she demands. Change isn’t just inevitable, but an ultimatum. And it looks great, too, when worn on Sweeping Promises’ flexed skin.
