Recommended Album: Sweeping Promises – ‘Good Living Is Coming For You’

In a day and age of post-punk oversaturation, Sweeping Promises are the reminder that angles need not be sharp or clean in order to shatter glass ceilings, or at the very least, erase the fortressed perceptions of the world around us. The Lawrence-based duo of Lira Mondal and Caufiel Schnug are the coarse correction to that, and one made for these highly stressed times. Their debut full-length, 2020’s Hunger for a Way Out, felt like a premonition that fed off the feelings of the many layers of anxiety that year spurned by embossing tangled nerve endings with raw detail and intentionally marbled, minimal layers of production. It felt all the more alive at a point when it could be hard to move. On its follow-up, Good Living Is Coming for You, the band embrace the process of self-work and healing without dismissing what always looms closely, in turn further fortifying their sonic canvas with a heated compression of thoughts that charges through a retrofitted punk power bank, always surging in its current. From start to end, Good Living Is Coming for You has an unlimited potential energy thanks to Mondal’s siren vocals, the centripetal force of her basslines in tandem with the fissured lines of Schnug’s guitar, and the strut of electric friction from vintage new wave synths. Pop hooks beam Sweeping Promises’ anthems like ominous warning signs through a concrete wall, laying out the alternative path toward staying one step ahead of whatever jagged turning points in life may come.

Highlights: “Eraser”, “Walk In Place”, “You Shatter”
