Queen of the number 13 numerology Sadie Dupuis is on another creative plane with this one. Under her moniker Sad13, the Speedy Ortiz frontwoman has always put her own hex on unruly experimental pop, but with 1331, her forthcoming mixtape, the challenge here was to change the shape of the way she works her magic within arguably the most tightest of windows. 13 tracks, with each clocking in at just around one minute in length, an early highlight in its first single “Watermelon Manicure” is an intriguing tilt on the strangeness she can conjure up beyond her fingers placed on the fret.
Reuniting with Exploding In Sound Records for its release, the return to her original home makes sense within the context of the listen’s digged, packed, and deconstructed riff manipulation doused with Dupuis’ weird sparkle of found sounds and noise synths. “But my tongue’s connected to my song and the way that I walk / So I say what I mean when I talk to you.” Her language may be written in its own script, and yet, it’s carved up and painted with enchantment.
