sad13 – “Boycott Scream 7”

Some musicians wrap up their submissions to the holiday playlist in sugarplum delusions of an idealist world. Not Sadie Dupuis, vocalist of Speedy Ortiz, who — in her own merits under her sad13 solo moniker — ushers in Christian capitalism’s favorite pagan-indebted holiday from a secular Jewish POV with an annual SoundCloud Christmas single, with this year’s being more so politically earnest than ghosts of the past in spreading the good word about the right to speak out against continued violence across the Gaza strip. You know, that place where Jesus Christ — the OG influencer who preached a message of loving thy neighbor regardless of their differences and argued against the existence of organized religion because of mankind’s ability to corrupt it for their own powerful gains — lived a couple thousand years ago? That’d be it. “Boycott Scream 7” gets its name from behind-the-scenes happenings surrounding the the forthcoming slasher flick sequel which dropped actress Melissa Berrera from its cast for publicly supporting Palestine, followed by the news of costar Jenna Ortega leaving the project in what has been alleged as a show of solidarity with her, and as of yesterday, seeing director Christopher Landon exiting for nightmarish reasons. Dupuis also lyrically puts pro-war Pennsylvania senator John Fetterman on the naughty list this Christmas in the form of losing her vote as a Philly-based voter. “People I once loved have taken off their masks / So I begin this season with a boycott of Scream 7,” Dupuis sings over a fever dream that pairs well with the modern shoegaze revival and Rankin/Bass’ The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.
