Turnover announced their new album, Down On Earth, less than one month ago, and the whole thing already comes out this Friday. It’s also the first album that they’re self-releasing after years of establishing themselves as a tent pole on the modern Run for Cover Records roster. Absolutely no fucks given to formal industry album cycle rules going on this time around, and it’s absolutely showing in their sound, too.
On its final preview, “I’m Up, I’m Up”, they’re on high with some of the most unexpected moves we’ve heard on a Turnover song in a minute. There’s off-center bleary guitars abound, but they’re not there to daze out to, but rather embracing a more kinetic vibe that pulls you into an energy that’s somewhere between a shoegaze-punk and Brit-pop vibe. “Penelope, we’ll be feelin fine / We’re sippin’ purple drinks on ice / Let’s float off into the open wide,” sings Austin Getz. They’ve already proved they can chill out. Now they’re proving they know how to let loose.
Turnover’s Down On Earth will be self-released May 29th.
