Turnover – “Nightjar”

Is that a lady bug in your eye? Perhaps, but it’s also the start of a new warm weather season as ushered in by Turnover on “Nightjar”, one of two early highlights from the Virginia Beach rockers’ forthcoming sixth — and first independently-released album since departing longtime home, Run for Cover Records — Down On Earth. Following a few soft experimental detours along the way of spinning through our heads in a post-hardcore-indebted take on dreamy pop-rock with 2019’s Altogether and 2022’s Myself in the Way, there’s an intimacy felt that feeds the warm throughout. Guitars lightly flicker in vocalist’s Austin Getz peripheral vision as he sails through the night drive — windows down, letting the breeze ripple through, and cruising through waves longing emotions in a calm. “I’m gonna meet you where the ocean meets the sky,” he sings. This one takes you there by any means necessary, if at least in your mind.
