Buzz: The overwhelming divergence happening amid the grungier, more experimental, and absolutely purer forms of shoegaze make this moment right now as great as time as ever to touch some grass with it all. she’s green are that natural balm in the modern current of a splintering shoegaze revivalism.
As others have occupied many a feedback-drenched, decibel-decimating, and/or glitch-rattling spectrum that have contributed to stretching these respective corners of the scene to their limits, the Minneapolis quintet’s self-described “moss music” is one that admires a rare understated beauty hidden beneath those denser layers. To experience it is to allow yourself a peaceful reprieve away from an endless swirl of guitar loops, static, and breakbeats in an already digitally noisy world. This is to say that she’s green’s creative method is a mirror into your more immediate surroundings.
Since beginning in 2022, they’ve grown out basements and bedrooms with their earliest EP, Wisteria, before emerging from a more refined chrysalis again in the short form last year. In the present, the band are evolving into a more earthly, ethereal form to reflect the fading spell of love on the recent single “paper thin” and resurrect what might be lost of it into physical matter through a more volatile nature in “mettle”. “empty house” — the latest preview from the band’s forthcoming third EP, swallowtail — captures the fragility of life through a quiet quake of acoustic strums knit across a stark yet pristine atmosphere as Zofia Smith’s vocals leads you into the daydream that’s already right there in front of you. The restraint in electricity doesn’t deter their sound from being able to pull you into their drift. It’s just that that feeling of floating they create is already being held within the space they inhabit.
As the band prepares for a busy summer playing amongst the legends, present day torchbearers, and next gens at this year’s Slide Away festival, open for whirling acid shoegaze rock greats Chapterhouse during their respective reunion tour, and then link up with air and gravity shape-shifters Turnover and Narrow Head, there’s reason to believe she’s green will stand out by virtue of their own organic sound.
Sound: Like peaking into the starry night sky through the tree lines of a forest.
Recommended: “mettle”, “paper thin”, and “empty house” from their forthcoming EP, swallowtail, and last year’s chrysalis EP
