Olivia Rodrigo – “drop dead”

Throughout the Petra Collins-directed music video for “drop dead”, Olivia Rodrigo is spinning out in pure bliss euphoria across the Palace of Versailles. That’s as grand of an entry into the alternative pop star’s new album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, as can be, though big theater kid energy has yet to fail Rodrigo’s first chapters across both the SOUR sides and getting into the GUTS of her love life. The only difference here is that Rodrigo isn’t bitter or jaded by an ex experience.

In fact, it’s her feminine intuition that has her on the verge of throwing up at the thought of actually being at her most alive just thinking about that first kiss. Dan Nigro’s production here scales up for that moment — synth strings swirl around her like French Baroque designs, doing their best to keep up with fast-fluttering heartbeat and words scribbling across our ears like pen to paper in her personal journey. “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’ / And I know why he wrote them now that you’re standin’ right here,” she sings, blushing a pastel palette over bubblegum goth-pop. Unlike the dramatic builds of her breakup lore, the climax always feels right there on the skin’s surface in the inverse direction this time around.
