Olivia Rodrigo released “the cure” on the same day as International Goth Day, and that’s likely by no mere coincidence. Whilst her aesthetic is primarily primmed in hues of vibrant pinks and purples, the latest reveal from the pop star’s new album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is as close to the dark side as she’s ever come. There’s the obvious Robert Smith of it all in its title, but over a disenchanted acoustic ballad that places herself versus herself in comparison being the the thief of her own joy, Rodrigo’s recent (red) string of ’90s alternative reverence ties together her theatrical pop melancholia penned with Dan Nigro alongside the ilk of Corgan (“Disarm”) and Grohl (“Everlong”) before unraveling into that colorful symphonic explosion that exists only in her own veins. “But my head is full of poison, and my heart is full of doubt / I got toxins in my bloodstream, you tried hard to suck ’em out,” she sings. Let this be a morbid reminder that while a relationship can treat the symptoms of our own insecurities, only we can be the antidote when it comes to loving ourselves.
