“Take me from darkness / Hercules / I’ve got a brand new / Sword and sheath,” sings Tracey Nelson early on into the latest single and title track from the New York-based songwriter’s forthcoming debut album. With a song entitled “Hercules” and lyrics like that, you’d think there would be some sort of theatrical display of musical might going on upon spinning the listen.
Alas, Nelson makes the weight of a heavy heart feel easy to carry, though he isn’t alone in his efforts, as the album was produced by and recorded alongside a dream team of indie alt-country session players in some dude named MJ Lenderman and Colin Miller as well as Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman, Ethan Baechtold, Xandy Chelmis, and Jack Kraus.
They’re not there to necessarily steer the wheel, but they’re certain there to help humbly support Nelson’s efforts in his romantic overtures by accentuating the sweetness behind strum with warm a swaying rhythm, warm harmonies, and coolness to the spark. “Just let me pick you up / I’ll carry you with me wherever I go.” You may not guess it by the way he delivers these words with a shrug, but maybe that’s also why he’s got shoulders built for the two of them.
