Mary Jane Dunphe – “Fix Me” b/w “Seasons”

Among one of 2023’s favorite breakthroughs was that of Mary Jane Dunphe, the NYC-based songwriter who in past lives was part of Olympia scene punk bands Vex, CCFX, Gen Pop, as well as the dreamy post-country sounds of County Liners upon stepping foot in Brooklyn. On her own merits, her debut solo album, Stage of Love, was one of the year’s best, with Dunphe’s transcendental experimental pop nature bleeding through as the perfect outlet for her to work through the art of self-preservation and human desire in an age of isolation. Her latest, “Fix Me” and “Seasons”, arrive as part of Sub Pop’s annual Singles Series, and again peer through her cognitive interiors, Perhaps just as intriguing in her continued evolution of both creative mind and self are how Dunphe strips back her sound’s skin, with each listens’ bedroom-quality production chipping into surface of her sound, be it in the struggle of finding your place in your surroundings, or looking to your surroundings as a means of groundings. The paradox revealed between the two songs is how we are at balance only when both of these worlds align.

Mary Jane Dunphe’s “Fix Me” b/w “Seasons” single is available now on Sub Pop.
