Mary Jane Dunphe is an artist of multitudes, having been the force behind the raw power punk of Vexx and Gen Pop, the outlines of dreams in CCFX and CC Dust, and the wandering post-country of the County Liners. “Stage of Love”, the lead single and title track from the New York City-based songwriter’s upcoming solo debut, sounds like it’s made entirely out of the most provocative emotional substance that exists within her, however, and is meticulously connected to instruments in the studio. You can hear it in the way her voice writhes in its restlessness with romance with the squalor of guitars, frayed-wired synths, and a pulse tapped right into her own palpitating heartbeat mirroring the excess of dopamine entering the brainwaves. “Your love makes it hard to sleep,” she sings, tossing and turning, heated with internal desire. This is the body electric fully powered on.
