Cola – “Keys Down If You Stay”

Maybe perpetual motion is slowing down for Cola. It sure sounded that way when the Montreal trio and post-Ought remnants recently released an alternative take on “Landers”, the closing track off last year’s breakout debut LP, Deep In View. Cola have made a habit of playing live their latest one-off single, “Keys Down If You Stay”, and now that guitarist Tim Darcy, bassist Ben Stidworthy, and drummer Evan Cartwright have arrived, they’re afforded the ability to play around with the pacing of where their inertia leads next. “Wading out, like a zero in the water / Remainder too strained,” Darcy sings, unbothered to be sinking, just so long as the hooks pull closer and the drum beat rivets deeper. By careening speed in favor of holding a moment, Cola embellish the details that make them stick.
