Overnight, the great Montréal post-punk introspectives Cola will be releasing their third studio album, Cost of Living Adjustment. Prepare to melt into its malaise — that is, if life already hasn’t done that to you. Unlike the multi-dimensional corners which surfaced on its standout lead single, “Hedgesitting”, the trio of vocalist and guitarist Tim Darcy, bassist Ben Stidworthy, and drummer Evan Cartwright really sink into the situation at hand which those of us outside of privileged circles have found ourselves in a daily grind toppled with an increasing capitalistic weight. It repeats and repeats and repeats itself until we’ve barely no feeling left to give.
That’s the resignation of defeat you’re hearing in Darcy’s voice on its final preview, “Haveluck Country”. Over a nonchalant jaunt that in better times might stick out with sharper angles, he sings of societal freaks of nature who escape all of the above through a luxury cocktail of power abuse, drugstore vitamins, and an obliviousness to their own good fortune. “Oh, it’s painfully serene / Crime without a payoff / What if it was all a dream? / Vivid luck.” To daydream of that life is one thing, but to become it? Madness.
