Kora Puckett – “In My Veins”

Kora Puckett is a multi-threat who currently makes a lot of noise as the guitarist for heavy gravity rockers Narrow Head, and has lent an equal hand in kicking it in the pit with Angel Du$t and Sheer Mag as well twanging it up with the Berries. When he’s out further west in his usual Los Angeles-based surroundings, he’s a songwriter and producer in his own writ, and a pretty damn slinger of the six-string in a different vein at that.

“In My Veins”, the first preview off Puckett’s forthcoming debut solo-album, stays loose with the rustic side of his many strengths, hearing him approaching life with an alt-countrified indie rock cool and some traces of hardcore sediment in his voice, too. It kind of plays out like a next-gen hardcore-adjacent kindred to J Mascis’ own solo work (it should be noted he also fronted the grunge-pop outfit Bugg in a past life, so this all very much checks out when you look at his big picture of Puckett’s creative lore.) “The pain in me sharp / I feel it in my heartbeat,” he sings as he shakes the plywood on the porch. That’s what happens when you nail a good feeling right.
