It’s all too befitting on this All Hollowed of Eves that the enigmatic spirit who is Bradford Cox would return to our air in mystical form. 15 years have passed since the Deerhunter frontman last released anything under his solo moniker Atlas Sound (and if you want to go there, it’s been several since we heard anything from him in band form either…,) though the magic of the season and the conjuring of a handful of tour dates looking toward the future of 2027 suggests we’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more from Cox in this physical realm soon.
Spooky season need not end when the clock strikes midnight tonight, as Atlas Sound’s new single “Octoberland” turns this world over to his supernatural spell. Calling upon burnt witches, vanilla smoke, crushed cicadas, and spirits floating over a sparse arrangement of bell chimes, the faint bellow of a bassline, and nightswept atmosphere effects, Cox’s latest craft has a wicked whimsy energy behind it. You don’t even have to be in Cleveland to feel this presence in the air — with this Atlas Sound apparition, everywhere can be October forever.
