Despite the listen’s expressed frustrations sung throughout, it sounds like Pet Fox are really discovering their own sweet spot on “Balance”. As the opener and title track from the Boston trio’s forthcoming and fourth full-length album, it’s obvious that the band led by Ovlov and Gouge Away guitarist Theo Hartlett have found the right mix in their craft, staying rooted in their hometown’s underground rock scene but also throwing in a heaping spoonful of melodic hardcore and a sprinkle of heavier shoegazing to their anxiety-driven reflection. “Go on to balance / Do you get tired of fighting?,” asks Hartlett to himself. Still, that urge to just go with it works wonders in sending their exhilarating guitar rock airborne in a way that leaves you feeling right where you should be in it all.
