There’s not a whole lot in Krill’s new song that actually sings to the concept of “Hawaii” beyond a toss back to a childhood memory revolving around making plans for a family trip. Instead, frontman and bassist Jonah Furman chronically self-deprecates on his relationship with love and affection to that of a dog running in the other direction with his tail between his legs. That the song isn’t just called “Dog” would just make too much sense, right? Once you disengage yourself from the notion that lyrical content needs to hit you on the nose with the song title, your ears will begin to connect the dots as to why the latest preview from the Boston underground rock scene heroes’ return album, Secret Language, gives the 50th state the honors anyhow, as Furman, guitarist Andrew Clinkman, and drummer Ian Becker entwine their dreary, slow-churning methodology of indie rock with the Hawaiian lap steel guitar form. It’s no “Mele Kalikimaka” kind of vacation, but New England weather wouldn’t have it any other way.
Krill’s Secret Language will be released November 13th on Exploding In Sound Records.
