Krill – “Dominate”

For Krill, history is repeating itself in a sense, with the cult beloved indie rockers returning to the fold this November with Secret Language — the Boston band’s first new album in a decade since they went on hiatus back in 2015. That’s all swell and welcome — especially when considering their role in keeping uncanny guitar rock alive when everyone was saying it was dead and gone — but for a trio of artists who also grew up during the umpteenth war waged by the U.S in the Middle East alongside other societal toxins, it would appear that nothing much has changed at all in the years they or Krill have been rockin’ or not.

“Dominate” dives into the recycling downward spiral of American culture by tracing its footprints through lurching barbs from the ’90s imperial era set by a certain pair of size 13 Air Jordans toward that of boots on the ground during the Aughts-era War On Terror. “When history ends, who plays the end credits? / When the audience leaves, what home do they go to? / It takes a village to burn down a village,” sings Jonah Furman. Now in his adulted self, he sees the correlation between the way man-made legends of those times were made out of an emphasis on ruthless aggression and how off the court, that same formula would go on to be applied to the way this country would move through this world. It’s the sound of what every child of the ’90s and ’00s came to know in defining their youth, now fucking up their future.
