“A classic rock song, strong simple guitar, a jam at the end, a moment where the band sings together echoing lyrics,” untitled (halo) vocalist and guitarist Ariana Mamnoon says of the Los Angeles neo-shoegaze band’s latest preview off their forthcoming eponymous debut. You really have to like how she calls it a “classic rock song” here especially, which can either suggest she and her ‘mates consider ’90s alternative as a reference point for that — and in this instance, the Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979” would very much fit that descriptor for the next gen, but might also make some of us feel incredibly dated — or merely that the sum of its parts keeps the formula true to the foundation of best of them. untitled (halo) still can’t fully help themselves from being their own thing even if the latter is the case. Gang vocals and co-vocalist Jack Dionne’s ultra masc spoken word interrupt an otherwise smooth dream sequence with coarser friction. Their adoration isn’t imitation — it’s homage while breaking through to the future.
