It would make complete sense that Spiral XP’s sound would resemble that of a heavenly twister: churning at high velocity, striking in its form, and something to awe at from down below.

The Seattle loud pop-rockers have been steadily bringing us into their eye of the storm since their 2023 breakthrough EP, It’s Been A While, a split with TV Star (whose members in guitarist Che Hise-Gattone and drummer Bryan Coats now count themselves as part of their own,) and 2024’s listmaking standout of a debut, I Wish I Was A Rat. And yet, on “Blue Earth” — the first single and title track from their forthcoming extended play — it’s the existential threats spawned by that of a chance encounter with one by Mother Nature during the final stages of a tour where their sound discovers an odd comfort in the swirling chaos and peril.

To make matters even more one of happenstance, it wasn’t intentional either. Vocalist Lena Farr-Morrissey wrote its lyrics as a means to process the experience. They found their way into the energy of the listen’s whirlwind of riffs touching ground unexpectedly later in the studio is proof that some of these forces come to be because the right elements collide precisely at the right time. The view surrounding them is a thing of dream, with that howling of the mind being something you want to sink your head into.
