Pierce Jordan is onto something with “February Theory”. When you start to notice patterns in life repeating themselves almost on eerily cue, you really start pondering cosmic fate, simulation theories, what or who is really pulling the strings behind this life, and if you’ve got any semblance of control over it. If these pages had any, it’d have gotten a new album from the Philly hardcore-punk experimentalists much sooner than the five years since they released their list-toppling effort, Diaspora Problems, but with the lead single off their forthcoming LP, NA I’M GON GRAB ALLAT — due out this January — the timing is just about right anyway in questioning our surrounding chaos.
The listen meets the energy of the moment, with it being a frenetic rager firing on all anxiety and rabbit hole mythos in Pierce untangling his recurring bad luck with relationships during the second month of every year. “Maybe that’s his lot in life / Maybe that’s his place / Maybe he just lost someone / Or maybe that’s just his face,” Pierce shouts, syncopating his fast-tongued cadence to that of scene peers Mannequin Pussy (who collectively appear in its accompanying destiny-doomed visuals) and their hellish view of “Heaven” during its mildest melodic bursts. The release is at least cathartic, even if it still leaves plenty of questions unanswered.
SOUL GLO’s NA I’M GON GRAB ALLAT will be released January 15th on Epitaph Records.
