This Is Lorelei – “The Kid With the Crown”

The singer in his own band is named Nate Amos and tomorrow, Amos will release he and This Is Lorelei’s highly anticipated new album, The Singer in My Band. While the project has been something of a DIY bedroom pop side-piece to Amos’ other band Water From Your Eyes over the years, this one feels like the proper leap to indie prestige status thanks to its release on the storied Matador Records and on the heels of many of Amos’ peers singing his praises through their own versions of his melancholic song.

Final preview “The Kid With the Crown” isn’t very fussy of a listen, yet it’s as succinct as you can get when it comes to a tune tilted just left of center on the head. The polymathic songwriter spins grungy guitar-pop and power-pop verse and chorus in turvy, sprite directions that sort of reminds these pages of the spawn of what a Dinosaur Jr. and Fountains of Wayne baby might sound like. That subtle familiarity through a new generation’s set of ears and eyes actually might just be why Amos’ knack for the uncanny hook has made his coronation as one of the best doing it right now with a six-string and pen unsurprising, but long overdue…
