Punked up DIY rock n’ roll lifer dazy has been releasing so many loosie singles and surprise EPs these last few years that it eventually became too hard for these pages keep up with them all. One thing you should know about band mastermind James Goodson is that he’s always been good for a solid compilation collecting it all in one spot eventually, and that’s what he’ll be doing this October when he releases the second volume of his MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD series, 24 Songs From 2023-2026.

We’re a far cry these days from the radiation vibing, fuzzed-and-blissed power-pop since the early anonymous days of its first chapter, however, and with time, his sound is now aging (and raging) in the red arguably better than ever on the newly included single “Beat Change”. Across a spiraling five-and-a-half-minutes in length, the listen plugs into a mind-melt amplified by the scuzzy studio mastering of Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Thurston Moore) not just through guitar currents and warped drum machines, but a bleak existential rabbit hole. “Everyone says they’re feeling alright / but everyone knows that everyone dies,” he admits as the feedback heats up. “I’m terrified now / I can’t stand the truth / The things that I have / Are the things I could lose.” Perhaps that explains why it sticks around longer than most dazy tracks — he’s making every moment count.
