Graham Hunt – “Getting Older”

“We’re all getting older / But please don’t think it’s over for you / ‘Cause I made that mistake once / One I’d never want you to.” Contrary to what he’s singing here, maybe Graham Hunt isn’t just “Getting Older”, but rather getting wiser with a tune, too.

Following a ton of his own self-releases, the DIY songwriter made a case for that last year with his breakthrough Run for Cover Records debut, Timeless World Forever, and he’s already back at refining his own formless formula with its follow-up, American Pyramid. After channeling the stranger radiations from the ’90s alternative radio dial through shape-shifting guitar-pop licks there, he’s trying a more au natural approach in the studio this time around with a full band and trad instrumentation.

On its latest highlight, old fashioned amounts to some of the clearest hooks he’s presented to appease his cult circle of listeners, going into big business with pop in all of its sunny, upbeat jaunt in crisp-strummed acoustics, spiralbound piano keys, and melodica casually zipping around. The timing of its drop is perfect as well, with there being yet another new Weezer album out there in the world to combat the indie rock lifer’s own golden run at prolificity — at half of Rivers Cuomo’s age at that — except in Hunt’s case, he’s got a better grip on aging not only gracefully, but timelessly, too, in his song.
