Citizen – “Good Fortune”

Citizen are the kind of band who has been honing their songcraft on their own timeline, unconcerned with trend or how to game the algorithm, moving along at their own pace. It’s made for one of the more remarkably slow-burning evolutions through the hardcore adjacent scene this last decade-plus. With “Good Fortune”, the opener from the Michigan band’s imminent new album, Halcyon Blues, what they’ve made is yet another huge entry point into their glass world which exists in its own sonic sphere. The listen is a duality of turbulent and melodious surge, with guitarist Nick Harm’s electrical current zipping around by a thread — one that’s adorned by shiny textures and softer instrumental flourishes which make frontman Mat Karekes’ powerful emotional declarations stand out resonantly. “The lessons have been unlearned / Write that on your page.” Bad fortune in relationships aside, this chapter is another good one.
