“How much further can they take this?” That’s something you probably won’t ever find yourself asking when listening to Show Me The Body, as the Brooklyn-based experimental hardcore punk trio have constantly been a state of evolution in what their own sound can be over the years in wild new directions. Across three albums as well as collaborative mixtapes, they’ve incorporated everything from electronic, industrial, and hip-hop influences, as well as reinvented the use of the goddamn banjo several times over.

What’s different about the band’s fourth Corpus Studio-born album, Alone Together, is their focus on what they’re doing, and it’s in doing what they do best. That’s being brought to the forefront in clearer detail by producers Klas Åhlund (Robyn, Ghost) and Kenneth Blum (Geese, Denzel Curry) resulting in what’s arguably the band’s most vivid projectile of fire-starting in the pit to date. The nuances in the details don’t go missing, however.

There’s still a hunger by frontman and banjo-buster Julian Cashwan Pratt, bassist Harlan Steed, and drummer Nijol Benjamin to upend norms. It begins by bastardizing their ratchet through a very New York City-sounding jazz vibe courtesy of composer Gio Escobar and his avant-jazz collective Standing on the Corner throughout the listen’s intro (as well as its subsequent interludes and closers,) doubling down on their own radicalism which in turn bulges through the soundboard like blood vessels bursting through on “Eat For Peace” and “No God”, bumping up the beat-making on “Good Time” and “Dance In The USA”, and swerving up with some alt-rock glum on “Do What’s Right (Happy)” and “See You Again”.

“Blessed are those who stand alone,” decrees Cashwan on both its opening overture and its closing title track. That can be interpreted as not just a mantra to the listener, but their own creative purpose. Thank whatever holy entity for that, because it’s what continues to fuel Show Me The Body’s own bold singularity in the scene.
