You might be getting the sense that thematically, L’Rain’s new album fata morgana will be doing a lot of emotional labor to deconstruct barriers and redesign them into an architecture that best fits where the Brooklyn experimental rocker wants to see her energy going. On its lead single “soulless cycle”, she looked to break patterns. With its latest preview “borderline”, Taja Cheek must first collect what blurs her path. The listen begins tendril and unbothered — practically in a dream statis — though the more she ruminates, the busier the view gets. Warm electric currents from guitars and squiggling synths sift in fast, while its percussive rush is aided by a free jazz energy. In the end, the noise is melted into one straight line.
