Maybe we shouldn’t assume so much of Carly Rae Jepsen’s habits. A new double album — one dedicated to daytime music and the other nighttime — and the lead single isn’t a familiar rush of millennial pop crush as we’ve typically come to expect? “On Wires”, the lead single off Day and Night, is a real “come hither” song as she puts it, that breaks that streak and then some. Slow-toeing its way over a slinky piano and bass line with CRJ in her R&B-pop pocket, she’s hot and bothered in this emotion of pining that takes on a life of its own. That it’s all built toward a maximalist climax in its chorus that needn’t ring out much but three words — “I want you” — is everything you to know as you collapse with her deep into this feeling.
