If you live for a quintessential Charli XCX one-liner, “Wink Wink” knows just where you to rub you right. She (jokes?) that maybe she fucked your dad. Rostam once told her she dressed like a slut, so now she shops at A.P.C. (my peasant ass had no idea what this meant, but it’s a fashion brand that basically sells tarps as clothing for as much as it might cost you to get a ticket to one of her concerts this fall.) “Scream if you wanna go faster” is no longer a thing when you’ve gotten rid of all those vroom-vroom cars that double-entendre’d your discography with finding pleasure in the fast lane.
This is to say that Charli has changed and she’s a “not a bad girl anymore,” but not really when everything in the XCX universe is to be dissected as something more suggestive and coy than what it seems on the surface. As its thirst-driven Aidan Zamiri-directed visuals indicate, putting your finger on it easier than you think, however. As for the listen itself, being a BRAT may have satiated those with a dance-pop hedonism kink two summers ago, but here, she’s banking on playing the part of a pop-punk princess with a love for her electronic toys that will hopefully get the blood flowing in the right direction this time around. Thank god for trousers…
