“The song kicks off with feedback generated from my hearing aids, prescribed to mitigate my fairly crippling tinnitus, alongside samples from my audiology testing. Nestled in the cacophony are audio samples from my various MRIs,” says Parts & Labor vocalist and guitarist BJ Warshaw of the latest auditory frenzy from the reunited Brooklyn noise rockers’ return album, Set of All Sets. The passage of time is typically a cruel hand, but in he and the band’s possession, it’s an opportunity to fuck with the senses in an extremely delightful fearless direction that even they have yet to fully explore themselves until now.

In certain respects, you hear their kindred noise outliers in Lightning Bolt and Black Dice through the listen’s irrationally necessary dual drummer pulse racing again one another. In others, their grand anthems are made manic here, with Warshaw’s choral intonations recalling early Animal Collective with far more electronic overload behind them. And those fake-out power outages? Their placements of deafening silence scattered between only blast the receivers wildly when the switch flicks back on. If this is the sound of Parts & Labor in decay, the corrosive ear bleed will have been well worth it in pushing the noise barrier.

Parts & Labor’s Set of All Sets will be released July 10th on Ernest Jenning Record Co.
