With “point blank”, the latest preview from Kelela’s upcoming album, new avatar, she’s over and done with doing the emotional labor for others, but she certainly isn’t letting the drain stymie her pulse. Over a busy, flickering glasswork beat co-created alongside PinkPantheress collaborator Oscar Scheller, the avant-R&B sonic shapeshifter is does her most at keeping pace with the workload mounting with a partner who isn’t putting in the same effort into their own self-regulating. “By now, I hope you see / the guns are pointed at me / And the more I pour, the more you reap / Got me working while you’re fast asleep,” she sings. This house is on the brink, but instead, Kelela somehow shimmers with a cool composure.
