Did American Football really think they were going to name a whole ass song “No Feeling”, and think they’d get away with leaving you without an ounce of it? And further more, with guest background vocalist in TURNSTILE’s Brendan Yates thrown in there for good measure?! The second preview from the Midwestern indie-emo greats’ fourth eponymous album is underway, and so are the big feelings in grand, unassuming gestures. In spite of frontman Mike Kinsella’s numbing word fragments dancing in the cosmos with the Goddess Nyx, what gives this listen its awe is in the dazzling spectacle which they convey over his blank space. A familiar spindling of guitarwork encounters borealis reverberations and magnetic rock pulls that keep heavy thoughts from sinking into the ether. In the science of all things, for every reaction, there is always an equal or opposite reaction, and in dwelling on the void, American Football expand their sonic universe.
