Basement – “Head Alight”

Basement are currently hot on the the path toward releasing their first new album 8 years with WIRED. The proverbial boundaries of the modern hardcore scene today would not have been reshaped without their presence even before the Ipswich band made their return from hiatus status back in 2024, and in this moment with the album’s final preview, “Head Alight”, they promise everything in continuing to rewire it diagram.

Whereas its title track, “Broken In Design”, and “The Way I Feel” reacquainted us with the band’s emotive vigor familiar and new, this one is explictly for the Basement dwellers who perhaps might be on a date night somewhere out there within the swelling size of their crowds. The listen leans into an atmospheric emo rock ballad which takes full advantage of the John Congleton effect on their sound, fusing lyrical visions of a thousand shades of white, the sun, her skin, and the way it burns vocalist Andrew Fisher’s eyes with white-hot electricity and blinkering chords slow-radiating right off its surface like a corona. None of that has any baring on that energy being captured within a monochromatic lens of its accompanying visuals. Listen and watch below…
