Madonna is back. Like, back back in the “back to the dancefloor ” sense. Maybe it has something to do with celebrating her past lives during her own eras tour as well Ray of Light revivalism on top of her whole ’80s thru ’00s evolution resonating with a Gen-Z audience, but it seems like maybe she’s realizing that what her fans really want from her in 2026 is a new version of the “old” Madonna. Of course, she’s the original Queen of Pop and can do whatever the fuck she wants because she’s proven herself time and time again. Let’s be a little honest with ourselves, however, that her catalog since 2006’s Confessions on a Dancefloor has felt like this wildly uneven experiment in trying to make modern trends her own by working with flavor-of-the-moments collaborators and producers.
Despite her reckoning with the speed of time hung up in the smashed mirror ball of Confessions, 21 years doesn’t feel like such a long time ago when given a first glimpse into its future sequel on “I Feel So Free”. Reuniting her with the more signaturely-Madonna studio constant, Stuart Price, Madge’s invitation back into her dark disco satiates everything you could desire in a late era re-reinvention. In smeared, glitchy spoken word and horny moans, her introduction to her new persona is giving “Erotica” for aural pleasures in an ultra digital world while the blacklit pulse stimulates that intimate feeling between connecting body movement and dopamine in the shadows, best experienced in the flesh. It’s the most Madonna thing we’ve heard in a minute. Sorry, Charli, but the dance floor isn’t dead until the queen says so.
