Teen Suicide don’t do straight-forward indie-pop very often, but when they do, it’s almost like you’re angry that they withhold this superpower from the world. “Suffering (Mike’s Way)” would raise a few blood pressure points in that regard if it weren’t for the bop-around energy weaving through in weird patterns keeping your head distracted from all that. Bordering chiptuned indie-emo and the sunny, tightly-hooked, fuzz-packed punk-pop of forthcoming tourmates Cloud Nothings’ nascent years, the final preview from the band’s imminent new album plays like one final flex of the band founded by Sam Ray in its new form right out in the open for anyone damning themselves with preconceived expectations. “It’s not the world as I’ve been told / It’s not the things we’ve bought and sold / It’s not a lucrative career,” he sings, going on about a lot things which it is not here while being underlined by partner Kitty Ray’s plush harmonies and effortless ways around the keys. While all of it may be true, they seem to have conveniently left out one other fact: Teen Suicide is not here to do it well just one way.
