As a human highlight reel off I Guess U Had To Be There — the Armand Hammer experimental arm’s newly-released collaborative album with Swiss DJ and producer Sebb Bash — there’s no lies found in that statement. It’s totally expected but not in the slightest ways redundant that the NYC underground rap king doesn’t make any false promises in taking you on a head trip between the bars and the multitudes of sonic shapeshifting which he’s proven himself 10 times over a proper master of ceremonies. This one really catches you on the corner, however, with its downward pitch-tuned delivery while pressure levels fluctuate in the room. A free jazzing interlude reveals a soulful hallucination, and yet, throughout it all, his flow is flawless despite the mindmelt. P’s and Q’s, don’t disturb the groove below…
