Kathryn Mohr – “Commit”

Sometimes the song finds the artist rather than the other way around. “Commit” is one way of acknowledging that. As one of the first songs droning experimentalist Kathryn Mohr had ever written on guitar years ago, the lore behind the listen is that it reentered her line of sight during an aimless walk before finishing up its final framework for her forthcoming album, Carve. The symbolic double entendre isn’t lost in its musical and lyrical design. “I can’t commit to anything or remember anything / I’m running around with my head cut off,” she sings over chords collapsing over one another. It’s as if they themselves are searching for connectivity to form some semblance of a visible outline. Not all that who wander are lost, as the saying goes, and Mohr’s atypical approach to embracing the screw ups and long road taken is proof that inspiration comes together when it’s time.

Kathryn Mohr’s Carve will be released April 17th on The Flenser.
