Kareem Rahma’s Tiny Gun – “NEW YEAR NEW YORK”

Of all the bands trying their hand at “reviving” the New York City aughts sound, it’s Kareem Rahma’s Tiny Gun who seem like the only ones to be doing so convincingly. Maybe those are the benefits of being a band made up of artists who’ve lived there long enough to see changes come and go since its pre- and post-VICE millennium age: the buzzworthy troupe led by viral personality Kareem Rahma and former members of the scene’s long lost DIY scene staples Mr. Dream, Motion Studies, and YVETTE were part of those golden age peaks before the price of rent changed the culture and Gen-Z had only a revisionist history to work off of in recreating a paler comparison. That energy carries through but is evolving on “NEW YEAR NEW YORK”, a new single from the Brooklyn collective following last year’s listmaking debut EP, No Worries If Not. With even less of a rose-tinted LCD screen and more of a “that bar formerly overran by trust fund hipsters that’s now a depressive dive, and better off for it” shift to less style-conscious punk, Kareem and co. aren’t trying to recapture a feeling nor are they looking to entertain transplanting to LA to find a new version of it. “New Year New York, I don’t need anybody / No need to pretend / Let’s go and leave the party / I don’t want to make friends with anybody,” goes its chorus. While the washed up ones can’t let go of past perceived glory days, changing times are merely a way of weeding out lifestyle tourists from the timelessly cool in Tiny Gun’s city. Call your boy Lucien, because they’re never getting old again.

Kareem Rahma’s Tiny Gun’s “NEW YEAR NEW YORK” single is available now on A Diamond Heart Production.
