And so it begins as a very happy Jet Black New Year to all those who celebrate, as we begin this new one with our third new Thursday single since the transcendental Jersey post-hardcore rockers reconvened in the studio in 2024 and began releasing their first new music since 2011’s album swansong, No Devolución. Based on new merch and vinyl, it looks like “Taking Inventory of a Frozen Lake” is the counterpart to December’s “White Bikes“, though where the latter was a beautifully dramatic deep gaze into atmosphere storming memories of fallen friends, this one is Thursday classic. Heavy melodic builds and Geoff Rickly showcasing peak vocal versatility by scaling verse to chorus to scream to spoken word puts this one right up there with anything you’re willing to argue is the band at their best, though that white neon guitar line reminds us that this is “new” rather than mere nostalgia. “What’s in my heart? / It’s a frozen lake with no ending,” Rickly sings, emotions blowing the widescreen on lyrical existential right open. The depths of that lake we don’t know, but Thursday make us want to see right into it.
