FACS – “North America Endless”

The energy being emitted from FACS’ music is informed by darker matter created on this tiny blue dot floating through the universe. With last year’s excellent standout, Still Life In Decay, the Chicago experimental rockers continued to mine this tension, but instead of expelling it through cosmic noise alone, the trio of vocalist and guitarist Brian Case, drummer Noah Leger, and bassist Jonathan van Herik began turning their sound alongside the axis of this Earth rather than grating against it, rendering some of the most mesmerizing orbital flights into our eventual heat death or self-destruction — whichever happens first. “North America Endless”, the band’s latest one-off single for Sub Pop, continues to experiment with careening into the void even further by way of aerodynamic melody amid a conflicted existentialism needed to survive modern life. Scrolling through the timeline today and watching dozens of videos where authority figures violently abuse their positions to thwart freedom of speech railing against atrocities a world over in tandem with the degree of mental gymnastics needed to disassociate out of self-preservation is a good example of that, and FACS wrestle with this internal unrest like it’s a steady endurance session. “Into violent panic / Your reflection shows,” Case exclaims. While there’s a look of terror behind that statement, he’s doing his most to not let it destroy him.
