Vulture Feather – “Friendship”

The arrival of Vulture Feather with last year’s standout debut, Liminal Fields, was a much welcome return for those familiar with a certain niche corner of Aughts art-rock lore. Return? Why, yes. The band, featuring vocalist and guitarist Colin McCann and bassist Brian Gossman — formerly of the might of departed Baltimore DIY scene outfit Wilderness — have kindled a new lease on life a decade later alongside drummer Eric Fiscus on the west coast with a sound glimmering back to their previous post-punk cathedral architecture, if now with wider eyes for a divine earthly connection. Their rebirth continues on “Friendship”, the first listen and para title track from a new three-song EP entitled Merge Now In Friendship, which moves forward its journey onto the trio’s existential plane, baring questions of mortality and natural wonder with a scrupulous enamor of rock sculpting. “I saw you dancing / Upon your own grave,” McCann hallows over guitar echoes and skylines expanding into heaven. “And I’ve never seen anyone / So very happy before.” The exultation of joy is morbid and life-giving in perspective at once for every second we are gifted to express it.
