Cloud Nothings – “Final Summer”

If Cloud Nothings broke through in the here and now, would they be considered part of the new class of shoegaze? Perhaps their charged-up alternative rock would be deemed “hardcore-adjacent”? Emo revivalism and punk-pop has always been kind of a given with Dylan Baldi and company, for that matter, and now that the band have found a new label home at the punk and hardcore label Pure Noise Records for the release of whatever they put out next, that news plus their latest single “Final Summer” connects these dots for us. The listen is a great reminder as to why the band, which has been kicking around for well over a decade now through all sorts of genre label waves, consistently reinvents its own wheels by way of outlasting time in writing hook-heavy jams with microdoses of all of the sounds above, throw in some of he and Jayson Gerycz’ recent forays into freeform jazz. “I have some thoughts / I have some dreams / But I need to be happy / With what I’ve got for me,” Baldi sings in the tail ends of its chorus. Inspiration doesn’t hurt, but they’ve been doing it right all along.

Cloud Nothings’ “Final Summer” single is available now on Pure Noise Records.
