Mannequin Pussy – “Sometimes”

“I set myself ablaze, just sometimes”, admits Marisa Dibuce throughout the chorus on “Sometimes”. This isn’t so much of a revelation coming from the lips of the vocalist for the Philly indie-punks with a penchant for playing with fire, but it’s the evolving temperature in this internal conflagration building between setting your goals and setting yourself on fire with your desires where Mannequin Pussy’s best parts in pretty slow-burns and wild alternative rock burnouts meet in the center. As the listen engulfs fully with its chorus, it becomes clear that the artist who immolates for their work is the often the one who has found a way to make both sides coexist, even if there’s nothing left after it.
